A Day in Moree New South Wales

Moree is a small country town located in north eastern New South Wales with a population of about 7,000 residents.  The town however serves and area population of about 13,000. The area is mainly farming of grain such as wheat and barley. Cotton is also grown in the the area.

Moree is also known as the Artesian Water Spa capital. Our accommodation in Moree was the Artesian Spa Motel. Located at the Northern end of the main township on the banks of Broadwater Creek. Very Basic Motel but quite typical for country towns. When we arrived we were warned about a recent mice plague which had besieged the town.  Fortunately we saw no signs of mice however country New South Wales was having a large problem.

The motel also had 3 Artesian pools, one inside a marque and two others out doors. We did make use of the pools at the end of each day which are well worth it. We also believe that the Caravan Park at the Southern end of town also has Artesian pools located within there complex and for the use of their visitors.

The Motel also has a Restaurant onsite which we decided to dine at on our first night. The meals were of good size and well priced. I had a steak which was excellent. The room itself was dated and small but clean and comfortable and served out needs and for around $110 per night was quite good value.

The following morning our first stop was for coffee.  We found Cafe omega in the center of town. Grinders coffee is well know so we felt the coffee should be good.

Inside the cafe in the courtyard out the back was one of the maurels painted on the wall.

The Yaama Ganu Centre at the southern end of the main street houses a cafe and Art Gallery displaying Local Aboriginal Art works. Although we did not try the coffee here the cafe look like it would be worth trying next time we pass through. We did have a wonder through the Art Gallery. All the Art works is for sale, unfortunately we were not in a position this time to make a purchase but there were some works that we did like.

One of the attractions in Moree is the maurels in various locations around the town. We were able to get a book and map of were they were located so we set off to see them all.  Two however were located within School grounds we could only be viewed from a distance as we were not permitted on school grounds.

Moree has a number of Art Deco Buildings which have been beautifully resort. Most of these are located withing the main town centre and can easily been found on foot as you wonder around town.

Grain Silo’s located on the southern edge of town is a very familiar sight in a lot of country towns.

Our last night in Moree and it was to the Royal Hotel for dinner.

On our way the next morning out of town a quick stop for a take away coffee. Located in an resorted Art Deco Building, 61 Cafe Balo has great coffee. Although we only tried two coffee houses on this trip, this one was my favorite.

If passing through Moree it is well worth taking a day and exploring this country town and enjoy the Artesian Spa Pools.
